about

Zarabatana are a Portuguese trio based in Lisbon. Through an intense process of live improvisation and the exploration of various musical vocabularies they have crafted an unique brand of ritualistic free jazz, which they now present with "Fogo na Carne", the group's first release. The fiercely detailed and expressive rhythmic section of Carlos Godinho and Bernardo Álvares lay the ground for the spacious and meditative trumpet of Yaw Tembe across six diverse and evolving tracks. Expect to be absorbed by some archaic impulses of praise to flesh, earth and fire!

"Trumpet blows and squawks, bass plucks and pulls, and percussive patterns seem to go against one another, yet they build together, playing off each other perfectly. It’s easy to get a group of musicians together to make noise and press the record button. It is not so easy find a group of musicians who can do this with control and restraint, not to mention talent."
~ Tiny Mix Tapes

"(...) this little ensemble makes a surprisingly coherent din together: though this approach to jazz obviously loosens the constraints on each instrument, it’s the tangible hold of each player’s restraint that makes Fogo na Carne an almost supernatural listen."
~ Decoder Magazine

"Combine free jazz with world music and you’ve got the improvisational and tribal sounds of the Portuguese trio Zarabatana. A favorite listen this year from one of my favorite labels."
~ Guide Me Little Tape

"Even though Zarabatana’s Fogo na Carne was released all the way back at the beginning of 2015, it would be a shame to miss out on the Portuguese trio’s refreshing debut. Named after a blowpipe weapon, Zarabatana plays what the label describes as “a unique brand of ritualistic free jazz.” Live footage of the trio playing in paper masks seems to bear this claim out, as does all three members’ frequent use of a whole arsenal of percussion instruments, from tin cans and shakers to chimes and chromatic bells."
~ The Free Jazz Collective

Yaw Tembe, Bernardo Álvares e Carlos Godinho, saram mau olhado
e rejuvenescem a pele."
